Housing & tenancy support
Help to access and sustain accommodation & develop independent living
Grant £15,000
Navigating the many obstacles to successfully finding a home and remaining housed can be very challenging for someone who has been homeless. Social isolation and loneliness can sometimes lead to a return to the streets, as can the challenges of everyday living. Support during the transition to independent living and life in a new community can be very valuable.
At Homeless Action in Barnet, a support officer gives specialist advice to help people get into accommodation, and then help to maintain their tenancy when they may be struggling with rising costs or other issues. Everyday challenges may include keeping on top of bills and budgeting, managing mental health or substance use problems, navigating the benefits system, or getting into training, employment or volunteering in the local area (which can provide meaningful occupation, help with social isolation and allow the person to settle into their local community).
People receive intensive support at the beginning, including with any additional needs they may have, and over time the support officer gradually withdraws support as the person is ready to take on more independently. With this type of ongoing support, people are more likely to be able to maintain a home, as they learn to engage with local services and develop their independence.
